NAMI offers mental illness awareness class for family

National Alliance for Mental Illness-Kane County North will offer a free 12-week course for family members, close friends and caregivers of persons with mental illness, including major depression, bipolar disorder (manic depression), schizophrenia and schizo-affective disorder, borderline personality disorder, anxiety disorders, panic disorder, OCD, co-occurring brain disorders and addictive disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
A series of classes structured to help caregivers understand and support individuals with serious mental illness while maintaining their own well-being. The course is taught by a team of trained NAMI family member volunteers who know what it is like to have a loved one struggling with one of these brain disorders.
There is no cost to participate in the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program. This is an evidence-based program, completed by more than 300,000 people worldwide.
The class will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 5 to Nov. 21, in the St. Francis Room on the main level of Presence St. Joseph Hospital, 77 N. Airlite St. in Elgin.
