Candidate approach is atypical
It must be election season. When will these phone calls and the door knocking end? I am an independent who votes Democratic slightly more than Republican. I am satisfied with the Democratic Party at the Congressional level, but quite frankly I've had it with some of these Democratic candidates for local office who sound like Chicago machine politicians when it comes to their accents and policies when they knocked on the door asking for a vote, and one just knows they'll raise property taxes.
This changed a week ago when I met a young man who spoke with moral clarity. Terrell Barnes is a local candidate running for DuPage County Board in the 6th District and he took the time to have a grown up discussion about the tough choices that need to be made. I heard in his voice an advocate for people struggling to pay the bills.
I heard also a young man who's actually been a member in the DuPage community for awhile which is refreshing when it comes to Democratic candidates. I didn't hear the typical tax hiker approach I've heard from other Democrats over the years. I detected no Chicago machine transplant in his approach.
He quoted JFK and said: “To govern is to choose.” It was like a throwback to what politics should be and could be. On Election Day he will be my choice.
