Lombard police get new traffic enforcement grant

LOMBARD, Illinois—The Lombard Police Department recently received a grant for Commercial Motor Vehicle Speed Enforcement, one of the newest grants available from the Illinois Department of Transportation. The grant award is $13,004.55.

The special traffic enforcement related to the grant will occur primarily during the daylight hours from April 1-June 30 and enforcement will focus on speed and moving violations by commercial motor vehicles. The special enforcement grant program is a result of the number of commercial motor vehicle accidents that have recently occurred. From 2007-2011, Lombard has had 212 accidents involving commercial motor vehicles.

The purpose of the special enforcement is to reduce speed and speed-related accidents involving commercial vehicles, as well as injury prevention. The cost of a traffic ticket fine is $120 by mail. Court appearance tickets are higher.

“The cost of a commercial motor vehicle accident can cost in the millions of dollars,” said Joe Menolascino,” Lombard Police Department Truck Enforcement Officer. “We are aiming to reduce the number of violations all the way around,” he added.
