Find right pet for you at Mega Adopt-a-Thon

Submitted by TAILS Humane Society

TAILS Humane Society in DeKalb will be joining forces with the Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin, Animal Care League in Oak Park, the Animal Welfare League in Chicago, PAWS Chicago, and 4 Paws 4 Ever in West Chicago, to hold a 36-hour “Mega Adopt-a-Thon,” sponsored by the ASPCA and PetSmart Charities.

The event will be from 8 a.m. Saturday, March 31, to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 1, in the parking lot of the Lincoln Park PetSmart store, 2665 Elston Ave., Chicago. More than 300 dogs and cats of all ages and descriptions will be available for adoption from the participating animal rescue organizations.

“We are very excited to participate in this nationwide adoption event sponsored by the ASPCA and PetSmart Charities,” said Beth Drake, executive director of TAILS Humane Society. “There are thousands of pets in our communities that need homes. Mega adoption events like this are a wonderful way for us save more lives by matching adoptable dogs and cats with their new forever families.”

“We wanted to make sure that we gave ourselves the best chance of meeting or exceeding our goal of adopting out at least 100 pets during the Adopt-a-Thon. That’s why we decided to hold the event for 36 hours straight,” said Tom Van Winkle, executive director of Animal Care League. “PetSmart has agreed to remain open for the whole 36 hours so adopters can take their new family member home with all the supplies they need to ensure a successful transition into the family.”

Potential adopters are encouraged to bring the entire family to help choose their new pet. Adoptive families can take their adopted pet home with them immediately after adoption, regardless of what organization they adopt from, though adoption fees may differ slightly between participating rescue organizations.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and PetSmart Charities have provided funding to make this event possible. The ASPCA is granting nearly $500,000 to support large-scale adoption events held simultaneously nationwide in an effort to save more lives of shelter animals.
