Lake Housing Authority chief receives Award of Vision

Current Round Lake resident David A. Northern Sr., executive director of the Lake County Housing Authority, was recently recognized with great distinction by The People’s Voice Newspaper and The Soaring Eagle Publishing Company as one of 2012’s Most Influential African Americans in Lake County, and was presented with their prestigious Award of Vision.

Over the last 15 years, David A. Northern Sr. has established a distinguished career in federal housing assistance programs including urban planning and policy development. He has also been confirmed as a vetted community leader for his dedication to his work and the community he serves. In 2008, he was given the utmost honor when he assumed the position as the first African-American executive director of the Lake County Housing Authority.

As the executive director, David is responsible for administrative and professional oversight in planning, directing, and coordinating the Authority’s varied and complex Housing and Community Development Programs while also ensuring complete compliance with all HUD regulations. His fiscal responsibilities include managing a budget of $30 million and overseeing $50 million in other assets.

His responsibilities also consist of supervising approximately 60 staff members and a housing inventory of over 3,200 units; Family Self-Sufficiency and family unification programs; a comprehensive housing counseling program; and being a sponsor agency for Illinois Hardest Hit Fund Homeowner Emergency Loan Program and the creation and ongoing nurturing of the Aim North Development Corporation (501c3).

The Lake County Housing Authority in all its segments works to serve over 11,000 citizens of Lake County.

Norther works tirelessly as he strives to see LCHA not only create affordable housing opportunities but to also be a good neighbor through the building of inclusive and sustainable communities that make a difference.
