Storm damage closes parts of Giant City State Park
MAKANDA, Ill.— The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says storms that devastated parts of southern Illinois have forced them to close part of Giant City State Park.
DNR officials say a tornado hit the state park Wednesday and uprooted trees and damaged a shelter. Park officials say some trails and other areas are unsafe and will be closed until they can be repaired or cleaned up.
The park is about 25 miles southwest of Harrisburg.
Six people died and numerous people were injured when a tornado hit Harrisburg early Wednesday. Blocks of homes were leveled.
DNR officials aren’t sure how long work at Giant City will take. They advise people to check the agency’s website for updates.
