Cook County commissioner indicted on tax charges

Federal prosecutors have indicted Cook County Commissioner William Beavers on tax charges.

Prosecutors on Thursday accused Beavers of failing to pay taxes on campaign funds and using his county expense account for personal purposes.

Prosecutors say that between 2006 and 2008 the county commissioner paid himself more than $225,000 and used some of that money for personal reasons. They say at least some of the money was spent gambling.

The indictment charges the 77-year-old former Chicago alderman with four counts. Beavers has been a Cook County commissioner since November 2006. He was a Chicago alderman for more than two decades, from 1983 until 2006.

A person who answered the phone at Beavers’ office refused to comment and hung up.
