Chrysler to add third shift at Belvidere plant
DETROIT — Chrysler has reported its first annual net income since 1997, and Illinois will benefit from that turnaround to the tune of 1,600 jobs.
CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed Wednesday that Chrysler will add a third shift at its plant in Belvidere, which is making the Dodge Dart — Chrysler’s first competitive compact car in more than 15 years.
A Chrysler spokeswoman says the U.S. automaker is adding 500 people to build the Dart and another 1,100 who will also work on the Jeep Compass and Patriot, which already are being built in Belvidere.
The results reported Wednesday are due to higher sales of Jeeps and other revamped cars and trucks. The U.S. automaker earned $183 million last year, reversing a $652 million loss in 2010.
