Wis. DNR warns anglers to get shanties off the ice

MADISON, Wis. — The state Department of Natural Resources wants ice anglers to start thinking about packing up their shanties.

The deadline for clearing the shacks off Wisconsin-Iowa boundary waters was last week. The deadline for Minnesota boundary waters is Thursday. The Michigan boundary water deadline is March 15.

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. March 5, anglers can’t keep their shanties overnight on inland waters south of Highway 64 unless they occupy them. Anglers north of Highway 64 must remove their shanties daily beginning at 12:01 a.m. March 19 unless they stay in them overnight.

The DNR is urging anglers to get their shanties off the ice ahead of the deadlines. Agency officials say open water is appearing on more southern lakes and ice along shorelines has grown thin, making access treacherous.
