Illinois State defeats Drake 64-53

NORMAL — Tyler Brown scored a career-high 26 points and Jackie Carmichael had 18 points and 20 rebounds Wednesday night, leading Illinois State past Drake 64-53.

Carmichael nearly matched Drake’s rebounding total as the Redbirds (16-9, 8-6 Missouri Valley) owned a 45-23 advantage on the boards. Brown made all 12 of his free-throw attempts and Carmichael was 10 of 12 while the Bulldogs overall were 7 for 13 from the foul line.

Jeremy Jeffers led Drake with 13 points. Aaron Hawley scored 12 and Rayvonte Rice scored 11 for Drake (13-12, 6-8), which has lost three straight since beating Wichita State in triple overtime on Jan. 28.

The Bulldogs never led on Wednesday, but Illinois State never was ahead by more than 13 and didn’t put the game out of reach until the final minutes. Drake shot 39 percent while the Redbirds shot 34 percent.
