SW Ind. authorities weigh charges in pursuit crash

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Southwestern Indiana authorities are reviewing the possibility of charging an Evansville man involved in a car chase that ended with a crash that killed one of four men who had allegedly just robbed him.

Police say 40-year-old Ira Beumer chased the four fleeing suspects in his truck early Sunday after they had robbed him at gunpoint.

That pursuit ended when Beumer rear-ended the men’s car, killing a 22-year-old man and seriously injuring a second man in that car.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/AclELo) that Indiana law exempts people from prosecution in some circumstances when they use force to protect themselves, others or their property, but it’s not a blanket law.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff Eric Williams says investigators are conducting a “full blown reconstruction” of Sunday’s crash.
