Record number of Indiana foster children adopted

INDIANAPOLIS — A record 1,787 foster children were adopted last year, including a single-month record of 439 adoptions in December.

The Indiana Department of Child Services credits a focused effort to move foster children into permanent homes and families as the reason. Agency Director James Payne said it was the work of countless child welfare professionals working together.

Payne also thanked the family court judges, community-based care partners, and court appointed special advocates for their work. However, he says most of the credit belongs to the families who gave a child a home and made them a part of their lives.

The Times of Munster reports the previous record was 1,773 adoptions in 2008.
