Mayor names new Chicago fire commissioner
The Chicago Fire Department has a new leader.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel has named Deputy Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago as the new commissioner. He replaces Robert Hoff, who is retiring after 35 years with the department.
Emanuel made the announcement Thursday at a firehouse.
Santiago has also served as the executive director of the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications.
Hoff’s departure was announced by the head of the city’s firefighters union, who said Hoff told him it was time to go. Hoff, a third generation firefighter, was appointed by former Mayor Richard Daley to lead the department in June 2010.
His resignation comes on the 50th anniversary of his father’s death in the line of duty.
