Grandma dies in house fire that killed boy, 7

Authorities say the grandmother of a 7-year-old boy killed in a Chicago house fire has died.

Fire officials say the blaze occurred Saturday morning on the city’s South Side. Firefighters found 61-year-old Barbara Scott unresponsive. She was taken to a hospital.

Hours later, authorities found her grandson in the crawl space of the unfinished attic. Chicago Fire Department spokesman Kevin MacGregor says it appeared the boy may have been trying to escape the blaze.

An autopsy showed the boy died from carbon monoxide intoxication and inhalation of smoke and soot. The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled the death an accident.

Scott was pronounced dead Sunday. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Relatives say the boy lived with his mother and grandmother.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
