Two Key Safety and Emergency Preparedness Staff Positions Filled

Safety and Preparedness Top Priorities of the Naperville City Council

The City of Naperville is pleased to announce that two key city staff positions in the area of safety and emergency preparedness have been filled this month. The city's new Emergency Management Coordinator and Safety Coordinator will further the City Council's mission of ensuring the safety and well-being of all Naperville residents and businesses.

Dan Nelson, the City of Aurora's former Assistant Coordinator for Emergency Management, has been selected as the city's new Emergency Management Coordinator. Nelson began his employment with the city on April 11 and brings with him 12 years of experience in emergency management, including developing, coordinating and implementing emergency operations plans.

Nelson has also served as a Firefighter/EMT and Emergency Management Advisor for the North Aurora Fire Protection District and the Village of North Aurora. Nelson has a bachelor's degree in Environmental Health from Illinois State University and has experience with the Southern Kane County Training Association and the American Red Cross AmeriCorps USA. He also has served as a member of the Illinois Terrorism Taskforce (ITTF), ITTF Emergency Management Subcommittee, ITTF Emergency Management Grant Review and Administration Committee, International Association of Emergency Management and the Illinois Emergency Services Management Association.

Safety Coordinator Don Phillips began his employment with Naperville on April 18 and brings with him 20 years of experience in the area of safety program management. Phillip's prior work experience includes delivering safety training programs, facilitating safety committees, conducting safety audits, investigation of employee accidents/injuries, handling workers compensation matters and ensuring compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

Most recently, Phillips was employed as corporate safety manager for Motor Coach Industries, North America's largest manufacturer of coach buses, and was responsible for the safety of 2,000 employees in 15 locations across the U.S. and Canada.
