Chicago police buying cars from local Ford plant

The Chicago police won’t have to go far to get their new cars.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the city will be buying 100 Ford “Interceptor” sedans and SUVs from the Ford plant on the city’s South Side for law enforcement. In a news release Friday, Emanuel’s office says some of the vehicles will be patrolling Chicago’s streets by the end of the year. The release says the city expects to purchase a total of 500 Ford Interceptors over the next five years. The office says the city will pay $3.5 million per 100 vehicles.

The announcement comes about four months after the announcement that Ford and the United Auto Workers union had reached an agreement that would mean 1,100 jobs to the city.
