Freight derailment delays Metra service on north and west lines

Metra commuters using the Milwaukee West and North Central lines will experience delays this afternoon and evening because of an earlier derailment.

A freight train derailed about 9 a.m. today near Grand and Cicero avenues in Chicago, Metra said in a news release.

The derailment was at a junction between the freight line and Metra tracks and has left only one track open for commuter trains.

The 4:30 p.m. and 5:27 p.m. Milwaukee West Line (Nos. 2229 and 2241) trains will not depart from Union Station today.

Other outbound trains will be departing later and making additional stops to accommodate extra passengers.

Service updates will be posted at metrarail.com.
