Rally for right to carry a gun

Last year, HB148, which would allow Illinoisans the right to protect themselves by being able to carry a concealed weapon, missed passage by a handful of votes. Illinois is the last remaining state not recognizing people’s right to protect themselves and their loved ones. To be clear, this bill would not indiscriminately give anyone the right to carry. There would be requirements in which only the most law-abiding citizens with proper training and no criminal record could apply for a permit.

On March 7 there will be thousands of responsible, professional people going to Springfield for the Illinois Gun Owner Lobby Day (IGOLD). Many will be taking the day off from their jobs to travel to our state’s capital to politely engage their elected officials regarding their positions on a number of issues. Last year was my first year going, and it was not only fun but very educational, kind of like a field trip for adults.

Some estimates put the number of people attending at close to 8,000 last year, but of course there was no coverage from any of the papers or networks from Crook County. I would be very surprised to know of any newspaper north of I-80 providing any information regarding this special day, before or after, so I wanted to get the word out. So please make plans to join us. There are numerous buses all over the area devoted only to this event and are very reasonably priced. C’mon Illinois, we are so close. Let’s make 2012 the year for real change, from the White House down to local government. It’s time.
