International students protest new Purdue fee
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — International students at Purdue University are protesting a new university fee that affects Purdue's large population of foreign students.
The Journal & Courier reports (http://on.jconline.com/wXENq2) that members of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association gathered hundreds of signatures on Monday opposing the fee. They want Purdue to reconsider the fee, which school trustees approved last May.
Foreign students enrolled this academic year pay $1,000 on top of 3.8 percent tuition increases for all out-of-state students, bringing their tuition to $28,646 per year. For the 2012-13 academic year, a $2,000 fee will be added to an overall increase, boosting foreign students' tuition to $30,702.
About 7,500 students from more than 100 countries were enrolled at the West Lafayette campus last school year.
