Temperature snaps 1896 record high

Soaring temperatures Tuesday afternoon snapped a daily record that had remained in place since the late 1800s, according to the National Weather Service.

Today’s record-breaking temperature of 90 degrees was measured at O’Hare International Airport at 3:54 p.m.

The previous record was set back in 1896, when the temperature reached 89 degrees, according to the weather service.

Today was only the fifth day of 2011 so far when temperatures topped 70 degrees, according meteorologists.

Forecasters are predicting a 40 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms for Wednesday with highs in the mid-80s.

Temperatures are expected to stay in the 80s until Friday, when highs are predicted to be in the mid-70s.
