Grayslake museum hosts Civil War presentation
Actor R.J. Lindsey will portray Civil War Surgeon General William Hammond at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum.
Hammond will discuss Civil War medicine and the improvements in military medicine with the introduction of the ambulance corps and triage system.
He’ll also discuss the historical medical advancements of the era, including surgical ligature, infection control and whether to use anesthetic for major surgery.
As Hammond, Lindsey also tells dramatic stories of several courageous nurses standing up to the generals, including Sherman, and the surgeons in order to get the needed supplies and food for their patients. He’ll also bring along a collection of surgical instruments.
This program is held as part of the Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum’s continued observance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
Visitors will also get a chance to explore the museum’s exhibitions, including a Civil War lobby display honoring Grayslake area veterans. This program is open to attendees of all ages. A goodwill donation is appreciated.
The Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum is at 164 Hawley St., next to the Grayslake Fire Department in the heart of downtown Grayslake.
