2 Elgin teens face attempted murder charges

Two Elgin teens have been charged with attempted murder after a fight Saturday night that grew to involve 17 people and sent three to the hospital with stab wounds, according to police.

Alexzayin D. Leon, 18, of the 0-99 block of Wilcox Avenue, was being held on $1 million bail and Andres Quiñones, 17, of the 0-99 block of Aldine Street was being held on $2 million bail, according to bond court documents.

According to charging documents and a news release from the department: 21-year-old Rogelio Luna was walking through a parking lot at about 11 p.m. in the 500 block of McLean Boulevard when he stopped after hearing someone shout a gang slogan. Quiñones and Leon are both charged with stabbing Luna — Quiñones with a knife, Leon with a pen. Angel Marquez and Edgar Luna were also stabbed while trying to help Luna during a melee that drew more than a dozen people from four different cars.

“While this appears to be gang motivated, the victims do not have gang ties,” police said in the news release.

Police Department spokesman Lt. Glenn Theriault said police stopped Leon later Saturday night based on a description of the vehicle he was in during the fight. The ensuing investigation led police to Quiñones, who was arrested Tuesday at Elgin High School.

All three victims were taken to local hospitals and all are expected to recover from their wounds, Theriault said.

Theriault said the investigation is ongoing, although no other suspects are being sought.

Quiñones and Leon were both charged with attempted murder in the first degree, armed violence, aggravated battery and mob action, all felonies, according to court documents. They must pay 10 percent of their bail amounts to be released before their next court appearances, scheduled for March 7 in St. Charles.

According to court records, Quinones was arrested in March 2010 by Elgin police on charges of felony armed robbery with a firearm, robbery, and aggravated battery in a public place. But all the charges were dropped by prosecutors in February 2011.
