Music notes: Madfox, Dreamer back for Haymaker reunion

Haymakers reunion

A slew of local bands from the 1970s and 1980s will play a special show to honor Haymakers, a beloved Prospect Heights club that closed its doors in 1984. The Haymakers Reunion show will include sets by One Arm Bandit, Madfox, Dreamer and many others. Proceeds will benefit two charities. Fans of the era looking for a trip down memory lane should not miss this show! 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine. $25; durtynellies.com.

Gospel legend

Mavis Staples began her storied music career in the 1950s, singing with her family's r&b/gospel band, The Staples Singers. She later launched a solo career, one that continues to the present day. Her most recent record, “You Are Not Alone” — it was produced by Wilco leader and fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy — won a Grammy in 2011 for Best Americana Album. Suburbanites get a chance next week to see this local legend in a rather unusual setting — the Tivoli theater in Downers Grove. Opening for Staples will be JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound, an up-and-coming rock/soul band that has turned heads with its 2011 record “Want More,” out on local indie label Bloodshot Records. 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, at the Tivoli, 5021 Highland Ave., Downers Grove. $35 to $50; ticketweb.com.

Double dose

Two giants of 1970s punk and New Wave return to the stage. Glen Matlock, a founding member of The Sex Pistols, and Hugh Cornwell, former frontman of The Stranglers, will perform as a double bill next week in the city. Matlock is the Pistols' original and current bassist (replaced for a time by the late Sid Vicious). Cornwell's Stranglers had a string of witty, infectious hits in the '70s and '80s. Clem Burke, the drumming whiz from pioneering band Blondie, will back both artists. Punk and New Wave don't get much better than this! 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at Reggie's Rock Club, 2109 S. State, Chicago. $20; reggieslive.com.
