Twenty Nine Glen Crest Musicians Win First Place at IGSMA District Contest

Glen Crest Middle School band students traveled to Lace Elementary School in Darien to compete in the Illinois Grade School Music Association District 7 Solo and Ensemble Contest. The competition was held on Saturday, Feb. 11 and Symphonic Band Director, Katrina Berry, as well as Concert Band Director, Lev Garbar, accompanied their students to the event. “Lev and I are very pleased with the hard work and dedication of all our students who performed,” remarked Berry. Twenty-nine students earned first places in solo and ensemble with four students posting a Perfect classification for solo and ten students posting a Perfect classification for ensemble.

Winning a Division I first place Perfect score for their solos were : Matthew Sampey (oboe), Jon Fritz (trombone), Kevin Ellerby (baritone), and Jake Hume (alto sax). Ensemble Division I first place Perfect scores were awarded to Grace Buckley, Kennedy Galuzza, Lauren Kats, Melanie Mitchoff (clarinet quartet), Gus Geiger, Ian Grigsby, Ted Hume, and Tony Raff (jazz quartet).

Division I first place ratings for solo competition were awarded to: Emma Jones (French Horn), Nikolajs Gaikis (French Horn), Gus Geiger (trombone), Ben Nishimura (alto sax), Alex Wetle (trumpet), Ben Cheng (trumpet), Michael Hsu (trumpet), Andrew Wolf (tuba), Sarah Lawler (flute), Lily Felsenthal (flute), Grace Buckley (clarinet) and Alex Wetle (trumpet).

Students receiving Division I first place for ensemble competition were Sarah Lawler

and Abby Shorr (flute duet), Alex Sellers and Colin Leppert (mixed duet).

Division II - 2nd place ratings for solos were earned by Ian Grigsby (trumpet) and Kaya Griffith (French Horn).
