Literacy Connection offers tutor training program

Submitted by The Literacy Connection

The Literacy Connection, an organization dedicated to adult literacy, is currently seeking local volunteers to tutor adults in Basic Reading or English as a Second Language.

The Literacy Connection Tutor Training program will teach you all that you need to know to help our participants learn to read, write, speak and understand English.

Many of our participants struggle with basic skills such as reading prescriptions, writing checks or communicating with their children’s teachers. By becoming a Literacy Connection Volunteer Tutor, you will be able to help an adult learn these basic skills and help them to communicate better in the world.

Tutors are trained to customize lessons focusing on everyday life skills. No teaching background or second language is required. Tutor times and locations are based on your availability. Staff is available to provide continued support. Tutoring is done one-on-one.

Attend a free orientation for prospective tutors from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Gail Borden Public Library, meeting room 2, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin. Training will be Saturdays, Jan. 14, 21 and 28, at Gail Borden Public Library from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Volunteers have the option to make up any missed sessions during a later training series or online. For information, call The Literacy Connection at (847) 742-6565, email info@elginliteracy.org, visit www.elginliteracy.org or attend the Jan. 7 orientation.

The Literacy Connection, an affiliate of ProLiteracy, serves adults and young children in 16 Northwest suburban Chicago communities: Algonquin, Bartlett, Carpentersville, Cary, Elgin, South Elgin, East Dundee, West Dundee, Gilberts, Hanover Park, Hampshire, Hoffman Estates, Huntley, Lake in the Hills, Streamwood, and Schaumburg.

Programs include English as a Second Language, Basic Reading, Family Literacy, Workplace Literacy, and Summer Youth Tutoring.
