City provides update on snow removal operations
As the city continues its efforts in removing an estimated 18-22 inches of snow from approximately 1,500 miles of road, employees continue working priority route plans in place.
At approximately 1 p.m. today, Public Works Director Dave Van Vooren declared primary roadways, namely arterial streets, to be cleared and passable. Approximately 30 large trucks, staffed by both city employees and contractors, are now working on snow removal efforts on the city's collector streets and priority two streets (primary internal subdivision streets). These efforts will take an additional 5-10 hours before streets are passable.
The city currently has an additional 60 pieces of equipment addressing the subdivisions' minor streets and cul-de-sacs with additional equipment still arriving. The efforts to clear these minor subdivision streets and cul-de-sacs will be a challenge with drifting conditions approaching 3 to 4 feet. The public works department estimates that all of these streets should be opened up by early Thursday morning, if the weather holds.
Van Vooren expects all subdivision roads to be passable by early Thursday morning, with the exception of some of the cul-de-sacs. Due to high winds shifting drifting snow, crews will continue to monitor all streets with the priority system ensuring that major roads remain passable while work progresses on the other streets. The city estimates that all roadways will be passable for the Thursday morning rush hour commute.
“Once again, we thank our residents in advance for their patience and support as we continue our efforts to remove snow and clear the streets as quickly and safely as possible,” said Community Relations Manager Nadja Lalvani.
