Ind. man shoots at suspected police impostor

HAMMOND, Ind. — Police in northwest Indiana say a Dyer man shot at a man who pulled him over and posed as a police officer.

The Times reports the 18-year-old man pulled over on a street in Hammond Thursday night when a dark-colored SUV activated flashing red and blue lights. A Hispanic man wearing a six-pointed star on a chain and blue and black clothing reportedly asked the man to step out of his car and hand over his wallet.

Police say the man was suspicious and returned to his car and retrieved a handgun, firing twice at the fake officer. Police say the impostor got in his SUV and fled.

Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller says officers making traffic stops must either be in uniform or driving a marked vehicle.
