Chicago’s South Side Irish parade to return
Chicago’s South Side Irish Parade is coming back.
The parade grew into massive street party complete with widespread drunkenness and reports of violence against police officers by the time organizers pulled the plug on it in 2009. Organizers of the parade that began as a neighborhood celebration of Irish heritage are giving it another try.
This year, the city transportation department approved organizers’ application for a permit for a parade, while expressing strong concerns in a letter about the organizers’ security plan and a recommendation to come up with a better one before the March 11 event.
On Wednesday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he hopes that after two years without the parade, participants will remember to celebrate their heritage in a way that is respectful to the community.
