Five people escape Elk Grove house fire caused by nest in chimney

A bird’s nest in a chimney was blamed for a fire that badly damaged a house in Elk Grove Village on Sunday.

The fire was reported about 4:30 p.m. at a raised-ranch house on the 1500 block of California Street. Five people who were in the house at the time escaped safely, firefighters said.

The residents were using a fireplace, and the heat ignited nesting materials in the chimney stack, firefighters said. The blaze then spread into the attic.

When firefighters arrived, one side of the house already was engulfed in flames, but crews were able to stop the blaze quickly, they said.

Damage was estimated at more than $100,000.
