Maholm joining Cubs

Expect the Cubs to announce Tuesday morning that they’ve agreed to terms with left-handed starting pitcher Paul Maholm.

The 29-year-old Maholm announced his own signing Monday night on Twitter.

The Pittsburgh Pirates did not pick up the option on Maholm’s contract for 2012, making him a free agent.

In 2011, he went 6-14 with a 3.66 ERA in 26 games, all starts. For his career, spent entirely with the Pirates, he is 53-73 with a 4.36 ERA.

The Cubs will have to make room on the 40-man roster for Maholm.
