Boy, 6, in critical shape after 45 minutes in pond

NASHVILLE, Ind. — A Brown County elementary school principal says the community is “hoping for a miracle” after a 6-year-old student spent up to an hour under water after falling through ice on a pond.

Indiana conservation officer 1st Sgt. Paul Bykowski (BIE’-kow-skee) said Trevor Young was in “very critical condition” at the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis on Monday after divers pulled him from the pond behind his home in southeastern Brown County.

Principal Lucy McGrayel of Van Buren Elementary School near the town of Stone Head tells The Republic Trevor is a “happy, precious kid” and the community is praying and “hoping for a miracle.”

The newspaper says divers found him in 15 to 20 feet of water Sunday. He had been underwater 45 minutes to an hour.
