Few people take advantage of system

Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, in support of his plan to cut the U.S. budget deficit by slashing benefits to the poor, made the statement: “A lot of middle-class people are now using food stamps. Many Americans are sick of seeing the guy in front of them using food stamps to buy steaks.”

Because of my job as a school recruiter I have the opportunity to to get into the homes of many families across a wide geography. I see hundreds of families each year and know firsthand the economic struggles many are facing. As part of the recruiting process we discuss the financial realities of pursuing an education and through that I get a clear picture of what they earn and how they earn it.

For Sen. DeMint to suggest that this country faces a major problem due to some people taking advantage of the system is just plain wrong. Not only is it wrong. it is irresponsible and reckless, and he is clearly pandering to the Tea Party.

Yes, there are people who take advantage of the system and that may always be the case. Most Americans, however, are proud to support their families in any way possible and will only rely on government assistance as a last resort.

Sen. DeMint, your dog whistle to your extreme Right Wing base can be heard by more than just that pack.
