Vick an exemplar? That's a fantasy
Editor's note: In his Dec. 29 fantasy football column, Daily Herald sports writer John Dietz and Daily Herald voters named Aaron Rodgers as season MVP, with two other NFL players finishing second and third. Michael Vick finished second among voters as “The Biggest Dud” of the season. This letter published in the Fence Post of some editions Saturday, January 21, incorrectly describes Dietz's selection regarding Vick.
For two years John Dietz, sports writer for the Daily Herald, cannot come up with a better choice at (fantasy) MVP than Michael Vick? A guy who saw nothing wrong with hanging dogs over an electrified pool so their toes kept touching the water? (Just one of his amusements.) He did say he was sorry for that. He stepped up to a microphone, said “I'm sorry,” stepped back again. He didn't even state what he was sorry for! But it helped get him back in the NFL.
There are so many wonderful players in the NFL, athletic guys who play great football and may also be a more fitting replica for sports in general. Someone our children can emulate.
And yes, I agree that Mr. Vick throws a good football. But if Jeffrey Dahmer threw a good football would he also be a choice for MVP? Or how about John Wayne Gacy? Maybe in his day, he threw a good football.
I'm appalled at Mr. Dietz — and the Daily Herald for allowing their sports writer to glorify Michael Vick. Last year I let this pass. I cannot let it pass again. Shame on you!
