Wis. Senate taking up bill on student restraint

MADISON, Wis. — The ability of public school employees to physically restrain or seclude students would be limited to certain circumstances under a bill scheduled to be voted on in the Wisconsin state Senate.

The measure up Tuesday says seclusion or physical restraint is allowable in situations like when the student presents a clear and immediate danger and the seclusion lasts only as long as necessary to resolve the risk.

It also says only people who have been properly trained should be involved in using such tactics.

No one opposed the measure at a hearing earlier this month. Supporters include disability rights advocates, school administrators and others.
