Quinn highlights Chicago language academy
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has congratulated a Chicago elementary school for making sure its students are true citizens of the world.
Quinn rang the bell to start classes for the school year Tuesday at LaSalle II Magnet School on the city’s North Side.
The school is designated as a language academy, and students take classes in a foreign language from kindergarten to 8th grade. They also learn about different countries, cultures and religions as part of the curriculum.
At an event Tuesday, students greeted Quinn in Mandarin, Urdu, Spanish and Arabic.
The school is also adding French classes this year.
Quinn says it’s important that young people learn to relate to other places and are able to “show the world what democracy is all about.”
