Libertyville boy killed in boating accident

Authorities today identified a 10-year-old Libertyville boy as the child killed Saturday when he fell from an inner tube in the Chain O' Lakes and was struck by a motorboat. Tony Borcia died as a result of traumatic injuries suffered in the accident, which occurred a a little after 4:30 p.m. on Petite Lake, near Lake Villa. Sgt. Brett Scroggins of Illinois Conservation Police said Sunday an investigation into the boy's death is ongoing and probably will take at least a few more days to conclude. Full story.

Ill. treasurer's 're-branding effort' comes with $2 million tab

State Treasurer Dan Rutherford's office is paying nearly $2 million to a Chicago consulting firm to rebrand and market a program the Pontiac Republican said just months ago was exceeding expectations. The state will pay Henson Consulting a total of $1.98 million over three years to “re-brand and market the Cash Dash program in the state treasurer's unclaimed property division” between now and 2014. A world-class racewalker whose Olympic dreams were dashed in 1976 and 1980, Augie Hirt of Wheaton still holds American records and has introduced the sport of racewalking to tens of thousands of people. “I think just the fact that it looks silly to people is why it's never caught on,” he said of the sport's limited popularity. William May, 41, was killed when his motorcycle hit a concrete wall at Foster Avenue, a Cook County sheriff's office spokeswoman said. May's 2012 Harley Davidson was speeding in the northbound lanes when he lost control of the vehicle at 1:50 a.m., authorities reported. Full story.

Schaumburg police seek jogger's assailaint

Schaumburg police have released a sketch of the man they suspect in an attack on an 18-year-old Streamwood woman jogging in Schaumburg Thursday night. The woman said the attack occurred at 9:45 p.m. while she was jogging west on the sidewalk along Schaumburg Road west of Odlum Drive. Full story.

Drought has caused many problems, but it's provided a rare opportunity for volunteers working to clear debris from the Des Plaines and other rivers. Low flows have made it easier to spot items that normally would be underwater, leading to cleanup bonanzas for groups trying to make waterways safer and more enjoyable for canoeists and kayakers. First-time cycling event a success in St. Charles

The Sammy's St. Charles Prairie State Criterium event brought cyclists from all over the Chicago area and beyond to St. Charles on Sunday for a day of intense racing near the Fox River.
