2nd fatal crash brings I-164 barrier to agenda

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The second fatal crash in a month near the same spot on Evansville’s Interstate 164 is prompting discussion of installing a cable barrier at the site.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Todd Ringle tells the Evansville Courier & Press the issue will be discussed at the next quarterly meeting between the state police and the Indiana Department of Transportation, likely sometime in February.

A motorist attempting to pass another vehicle lost control of his vehicle Thursday and crossed the median, striking a car driven by 87-year-old Marvin Lawson of Henderson, Ky. Lawson died from his injuries.

Another crossover collision on Dec. 16 left four Gibson County residents dead.

Ringle says a cable barrier would have prevented the latest fatality.

Indiana has installed 350 miles of cable barriers in five years.
