Weisner needs to wear just one hat

The criticism of Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner is not political, but logical. Expressing one’s concerns is never easy, but it is necessary when needed. As taxpayers and residents of Aurora we have a responsibility to express our concerns. We might even cause some ill feelings in the process. That is not the intention.

Managing the second largest city in Illinois is a full-time job. Mayor Weisner was elected by Aurorans to execute the duties and responsibilities of that office. So, how could a mayor give his undivided attention to the second largest city in Illinois while also currently serving on the Illinois Tollway Authority? The simple answer is he can’t.

Here’s one example: Aurora Police Department statistics show there were 4,462 major crimes in 2011, an increase compared to 2010. An increase in crime is only one symptom, there’s more to the problem. Mayor Weisner was elected twice by the people of Aurora to dedicate his time, talent and energy to the city of Aurora, not the Illinois Tollway Authority. Keep in mind that the tollway authority also imposed an 87 percent increase in the tolls we pay daily. Mayor Tom Weisner went along with the increase and voted yes for higher tolls for all Aurora families.

It’s interesting to know that Mayor Weisner does not even list being appointed to Illinois Tollway Authority on the City of Aurora website biography. Residents of Aurora are victims of violent crimes, higher tolls and less opportunity with businesses closing their doors. Are we growing wiser as time passes or more foolish? Mayor Weisner needs to determine if his talents are better fitted to serve the city of Aurora or the Illinois Tollway Authority.
