Catchings, Parker earn WNBA honors
Tamika Catchings of the Indiana Fever and Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks, a pair of WNBA Most Valuable Players, were named the WNBA's Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week for games played May 18-27.
For Catchings, a former Stevenson High School and Tennessee standout, the weekly award is the 15th such honor of her career, third most in league history. Catchings led Indiana to a 3-0 record during the season's opening week of play, and paced the Fever in scoring (21.0 ppg), rebounds (7.3), defensive boards (6.0), steals (2.67), and minutes (31.3).
For Parker, a former Naperville Central and Tennesse standout, the weekly award is the sixth such honor of her career. Parker led the Sparks, who missed the playoffs a year ago, to a 3-1 mark, second best in the Western Conference behind only the defending WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx. Parker led the league in blocks (2.7 bpg), ranked third in the Western Conference in scoring (20.5 ppg), and tied for third in rebounds (7.8 rpg). She finished the week with three consecutive games of 20-or-more points and a pair of double-doubles.
