Will Oscar nominations show ‘Grit’?

Here are five things to watch for when the nominations for the 2010 Academy Awards are announced at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

1. If teen Hailee Steinfeld gets nominated for her stellar role in the Coen brothers’ remake of “True Grit,” will she be slotted in the best actress category? (Not likely.) Or in the supporting actress category, where she shouldn’t be, given that her character practically carries the entire movie and burns up more screen time than co-star Jeff Bridges? (Likely.)

2. If Annette Bening receives a best actress nomination (ironclad) for her work in “The Kids Are All Right,” will her co-star Julianne Moore be cheated out of the same honor, despite the fact that her role is larger than Bening’s and possesses a dramatic arc that Bening’s doesn’t? (More than likely.)

3. Will the marvelous “Toy Story 3” deservedly pick up nominations for best animated feature (ironclad) and best picture? (Probably, although voters might not want to “waste” their votes nominating it for best picture when it has a lock on animated feature.)

4. Will the smart. sad, insightful, formerly adults-only, NC-17-rated “Blue Valentine” be overlooked by Academy voters for best picture, actor (Ryan Gosling), actress (Michelle Williams) and director (Derek Cianfrance)? Probably for picture and director. Not likely for its two stars.

5. Will the lovely Emma Stone be nominated as best actress for her surprisingly complex, heartfelt role in “Easy A,” despite the fact that it’s a bawdy teen sex comedy loosely built around Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter” and old John Hughes movies? (No chance.)

The 83rd annual Academy Awards will be broadcast live Feb. 27 on ABC from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Final ballots will be mailed to voters Feb. 2. Voting deadline is Feb. 22.
