Tweet retreat: MLB suspends White Sox manager
Already beaten down by a 10-16 start and, more recently, a 3-8 road trip, the White Sox didn’t really even seem to care about manager Ozzie Guillen’s two-game suspension for his actions during Wednesday night’s loss at Yankee Stadium.
Guillen, also fined a reported $20,000, was ejected by home-plate umpire Todd Tichenor for arguing the strike zone in the first inning.
On his personal Twitter account shortly after, Guillen said: “This one is going to cost me a lot of money … this is pathetic.” And: “Today a tough guy (Tichenor) showed up at yankee stadium.”
Guillen began serving the suspension Friday, and bench coach Joey Cora is running the club until Guillen returns Sunday. Before exiting U.S. Cellular Field, Guillen said he expected the punishment after Major League Baseball called Friday morning.
“I know it’s something I shouldn’t be doing, especially during the game,” Guillen said. “But in the meanwhile, I did it. I accepted my responsibility. It was a great conversation and I’m with them 100 percent.
“The conversation was all about baseball, what we want from this game, what we expect from this game, and I’m part of this game. I don’t want it to go somewhere it shouldn’t be.”
White Sox general manager Kenny Williams isn’t angry about the suspension. If anything, he is puzzled by another round of Twitter nonsense.
“I can’t say that I didn’t see it coming,” Williams said. “I don’t particularly understand the whole social-media thing. I understand how it can work for you at times, but I certainly see more of the pitfalls. I don’t get it.
“I don’t get why people want to tell all of their business and whereabouts all the time, but maybe I’m just old-fashioned.”
White Sox captain Paul Konerko had a similar response.
“I guess MLB doesn’t let you do that stuff,” Konerko said. “I’ve got to be honest with you, that stuff is kind of beyond me as far as Twitter and all that stuff. Ozzie is going to do what he’s going to do, and I think we can agree that no one is going to stop Ozzie.”
Is Guillen still going to tweet?
“I will continue to Twitter, just make sure I don’t Twitter during the game,” Guillen said. “Listen, I’ve been Twittering for two years or whatever it is and that’s the first time I ever, ever, ever tweeted about baseball and look what happened. Well, I learned a lesson. Am I going to Twitter? (Heck), yeah, that’s my private life.”
