Castro’s lawyers: asssault accusations ‘baseless’
The Chicago Cubs are looking into reports that Starlin Castro, their 21-year-old star shortstop, has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman in his Chicago apartment last fall.
Lawyers representing Castro have called the allegations “baseless,” and no charges have been filed and there is no indication that Chicago police are considering filing charges.
“We are aware that a police report was filed regarding an incident involving Starlin, but we have received limited information. While this is something we take very seriously, there is not enough information to make any further comment or take action at this time,” team officials said in a statement released Friday. “We are hopeful when the facts are brought to light, Starlin will be cleared of any wrongdoing.”
Castro’s attorneys, Jay K. Reisinger and Michael P. Gillespie, released this statement:
“We are aware of certain allegations that have been made against our client, Starlin Castro. We have thoroughly investigated this matter, and we are confident that these allegations are baseless. Given the sensitive nature of this matter, we cannot comment any further,” read the joint statement from attorneys
The allegations were first reported by WBBM 780-AM with anonymous sources saying police would like to talk with Castro. The heavily redacted police report offers little information, according to the WBBM report.
Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer, when questioned by reporters Friday afternoon, reiterated the team’s concern and perspective.
“We expect our players to behave at the highest level of respect on the field, off the field and in the community,” Hoyer said. “Being a member of the Cubs carries with it a very high standard of conduct and responsibility.
“While we cannot address this particular matter at this time, we can only emphasize our organization’s commitment to being respectful members of the community and being positive examples for our great fans.”
