Fire damages Des Plaines home
A fire that apparently started when something was left on the stove caused an estimated $100,000 damage to half of a Des Plaines duplex, Des Plaines Fire Chief Alan Wax said Saturday. No one was home when the fire occurred, he said.
The fire department received a call from a neighbor about smoke coming from the rear of the home in the 800 block of Beau Drive at 10 a.m. Saturday, said Wax. When firefighters arrived four minutes later they found fire in the home, and they put the fire out in less than 10 minutes.
The first floor of the home received extensive fire damage, and extensive smoke damage occurred on the second floor. The unit is not habitable, said Wax. The other home in the building received smoke damage but is habitable, he said.
The Mount Prospect Fire Department assisted, and the Red Cross and the Des Plaines Emergency Management Agency were helping relocate the family.
Traffic was shut down on that block until shortly before noon.
