Lawmakers want you to buckle up in back seat

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois lawmakers want tougher rules for using safety belts.

They've approved legislation that would require passengers in the back seats of cars and trucks to wear seat belts.

The new requirement was approved by the Illinois Senate 30-23 Friday evening. It had already passed the House, so now it goes to the governor.

Some lawmakers consider it unnecessary government intrusion.

Senate President John Cullerton said a vote for back seat safety belts was a vote for saving lives.

In Illinois, 38 back-seat passengers not wearing seat belts died in 2009.
