Jane Addams Hull House closing

Chicago’s Hull House is closing because of financial difficulties.

Nobel Prize winner Jane Addams founded the agency in 1889 to help immigrants adjust to life in America at the turn of the 20th century. The agency’s board chairman Stephen Saunders said Thursday that the organization will close this spring and file for bankruptcy. Saunders says the agency will work to make sure the people it serves will have access to the help they need.

Jane Addams Hull House Association has provided assistance to 60,000 people a year in the Chicago area. The agency cited the current economic climate for increasing demand for services while compromising fundraising.

The Hull House agency isn’t affiliated with the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, which will remain open.
