Daily Herald wins second place in national headline contest
The Daily Herald was awarded second place in its category of the American Copy Editors Society's 2015 national headline contest Friday night.
The publication won the prize with a staff entry of 10 headlines written last year by Kim Becker, Don Friske, Michelle Holdway, Rick Kirby, Susan Klovstad, Jeff Nordlund, Jana Ronayne, Marie Wilson and Jim Davis.
Some of the headlines were "All signs point North" for Cubs coverage, "New York state of bind" when the Cubs were losing in the playoffs to the Mets, "Keeping the peace of mind" for an article about a police chaplain, "CME: For traders, life no longer the pits," and "When an addict's family comes second" for an article about heroin use.
The Daily Herald was in the category of newspapers with a circulation of 100,000 or less. The Philadelphia Daily News was awarded first place in the category.
The American Copy Editors Society is a trade organization of professionals who, among other things, edit material in a variety of fields and write headlines and other display type for print and online media. It has been running a national headline contest nearly since its inception in 1997. The Daily Herald has won its category of the contest twice, in 2011 and 2013.
The 2015 prizes were awarded Friday at the group's national conference in Portland, Oregon.
