Kids can find the Grinch in Naperville, win prizes in December contest

December brings some extra fun to Naperville this year because the Grinch will be on the loose.

Naperville turns into Whoville, the Seussian village that is the setting for Dr. Seuss’s classic book “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” as the familiar grumpy, green and grouchy character will be hidden in nearly 60 stores and businesses in Naperville. It’s all part of Naperville’s Grow Your Heart Three Sizes promotion this holiday season.

“What could be more fun than finding the Grinch, but finding him at local, independent businesses in your community?” said Becky Anderson of Naperville’s Anderson’s Bookshop.

“Grow Your Heart Three Sizes celebrates the uniqueness, fun and strength of community.”

So where is the Grinch? Throughout Naperville, of course. He’s turning 56 this year, and to celebrate, the Grinch is visiting different local businesses throughout December. Those who spot him can win prizes, including candy canes, buttons and books. Grinch figures are showing up in local stores, businesses and other establishments.

Anyone who wishes to participate can pick up a “Grow Your Heart Three Sizes” search list with the names of all the participating businesses, and collect an “I Found the Grinch at ___________” card for each Grinch they spot.

Collecting cards in 16 or more businesses and turning them in at Anderson’s will win a candy cane and an entry for other, larger prizes of Dr. Seuss-related books and toys to be drawn Monday, Dec. 30, at the Grinch party at 2 p.m. at Anderson’s.

New this year is a push to encourage acts of kindness by children. Once the young participants find 16 Grinches and receive their Good Deeds Starter Kit, they will be prompted to follow through with kindnesses like: Help do the dishes after dinner; Call or spend time with your grandparents; or Do something nice for your mom and dad without being asked. It’s all to help hearts grow this season.

The Grinch is the creation of the late Theodore Geisel, whose Dr. Seuss books have delighted children for generations. In celebration of the Grinch’s longevity and popularity, IndieBound Naperville has adopted the character this holiday season to promote shopping local.

Last year marked the first time the Seuss estate had given permission for this kind of promotional program, and it was launched in Naperville.

Participation is free, and the game lasts until the concluding party on Dec. 30. For information about hunting for the Grinch in Naperville, call Anderson’s Bookshop at (630) 355-2665.
