Volunteers pack food for students, veterans during MLK event in Glen Ellyn
Students helped packed hundreds of boxes and backpacks Saturday with food that will be delivered to homeless veterans and students in need.
Organized by the United Cerebral Palsy Seguin of Greater Chicago, the volunteer event in Glen Ellyn celebrated the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and reflected on his dream for equality and civil rights for all people.
With help from Glen Crest Middle School in Glen Ellyn and Lincoln Middle School in Berwyn, volunteers gathered to fill 350 “weekend backpacks” for students experiencing food insecurity at home. The meals will be distributed by social work teams at area school districts to ensure student privacy.
Additionally, 250 nutritious “breakfast bags” were packed and are expected to be delivered to the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans and other related organizations.
