Red Stars blasted early, often
The Chicago Red Stars fell into an early hole and could not recover as the Boston Breakers won 3-1 Sunday in Women's Professional Soccer action at Toyota Park.
It was the most goals the Red Stars' defense allowed this season. The last time the Red Stars surrendered 3 goals was a 3-2 loss to the Washington Freedom on July 26, 2009.
The Red Stars (4-7-5) have 17 points and are in a current fifth-place tie with the Freedom.
Kelly Smith scored twice for Boston, netting goals in the ninth and 12th minutes, then assisting Ifeoma Dieke's goal in the 14th to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Red Stars' Kosovare Asllani scored her team's lone goal in the 80th minute off of a Casey Nogueira free kick from the left side.
