Red Stars add midfielder Reiser, release Geneva's Santacaterina
The Chicago Red Stars have added midfielder Sophie Reiser to their roster as a developmental player and released Geneva native Jackie Santacaterina, team officials announced Tuesday.
Reiser was selected by the Red Stars in the fifth round (42nd overall) of the 2010 WPS Draft out of Columbia University. The Seattle, Wash., native played for the Red Stars in the preseason but was dealt a setback with a stress fracture in her shin.
Reiser was not included on the squad's first-team or developmental roster because of the injury, but she joined the Red Stars as a trialist player after Chicago's 2010 season kicked off.
Reiser is a three-time All-Ivy League First Team player who was named Ivy League Player of the Year in 2008. She holds Columbia's assists record with 28, is ranked second in points (83) and third in goals scored (26).
Santacaterina, midfielder who starred for Geneva High School, Eclipse Select and the University of Illinois, was the Red Stars' seventh-round selection (60th overall) in the 2010 WPS Draft. Santacaterina played throughout the preseason and was named to the team's developmental roster, but she did not see the playing field in a WPS match this year.
